Demi Stokes playing for England

England and former Manchester City defender Demi Stokes has signed a contract with newly-promoted championship side Newcastle United.

Stokes announced her departure from the Sky Blues in May, having been with the club since 2015, during which she made 113 appearances and scored four goals.

Stokes was part of the Lionesses squad that won the Euros in 2022, but she has struggled for game time this season. With this bold move to Newcastle, she hopes her extensive experience will earn her the well-deserved playing time she seeks.

On joining Newcastle United Women, Stokes said: “”I am thrilled to be joining Newcastle United and returning home to the North East.

“I still have so much to give on the pitch and I’m excited to bring my experience to a club with such big ambitions. From the moment I spoke to the club, I felt valued and knew this was the right place for me to contribute to an exciting, new project.

“I can’t wait to get going and meet the team.”

The 32-year-old has had a very successful career so far, winning the FA Cup with Manchester City three times, the league once, and the Continental Cup three times.

Additionally, she has been part of the Lionesses side that won the Euros, the SheBelieves Cup, and the Arnold Clark Cup.

With such an impressive array of silverware, it’s no surprise that newly promoted Newcastle United pursued the talented left-back.

As the new season approaches, it will be exciting to see how Stokes integrates into the Newcastle team.
