Ex-Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro has been appointed as the new head coach of Division 1 Féminine club Olympique Lyonnais, signing a contract until 2026.

Montemurro succeeds Sonia Bompastor, who left her position last month to join Chelsea.

The 54-year-old Australian manager enjoyed a successful tenure in North London from 2017 to 2021, during which he led Arsenal to victories in the League Cup and Women’s Super League.

For the past three years, Montemurro has been at the helm of Juventus Women in Serie A, where he won the league title in the 2021/22 season, along with two Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup trophies.

Montemurro expressed his excitement about the new role, stating: “I am extremely honoured to be part of such an exceptional organisation as Olympique Lyonnais, the world leader in women’s football.

”When I think of Lyon, I think of high-level professionalism and excellence.”
