Arsenal’s head coach Jonas Eidevall has announced his resignation this morning.

Eidevall will be replaced by assistant coach Renée Slegers after he spent three years as the women’s team manager.

The Swedish football coach joined the squad in June 2021 and his time there saw them win two league cup titles and top three finishes every season.

But under Eidevall the Gunners never saw the league title and struggled with consistency throughout the WSL season, thriving against top three teams like Chelsea and Manchester City but struggling against an eighth place Everton.

Ahead of this season, Eidevall said: “We learnt a lot from last season with that and I feel we are at a stronger place and we have come further ahead if I compare to the same time last season.

“The expectation of what is a good season for us, it is to win the league.

“We are past that point where we were coming away and saying ‘Oh we were two points off winning the league, maybe it was still a good season.’

But for us going forward and to measure what success is for us, success for us is winning. Period.”

This season has not got off to the start he had hoped, only winning one of four of their first matches in the WSL, most recently losing to Chelsea 1-2 at home.

After thrashing the Blues 4-1 last time they played them at the Emirates in the WSL, their current sixth place position in the table this early on is not reflective of the quality of players they have.

Fans have been calling for the resignation of Eidevall for months with #JONASOUT trending on X and graffiti of the same sentiment opposite the Emirates.

Sporting Director Edu Gaspar told Arsenal: “We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021.

“We have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team and recognise the role he has played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women.”
