Spain and Brazil will meet again tonight for the semi-final of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and this time, only one can go through to the final.
Both teams began their journey in Group C, alongside Japan and Nigeria. After Nigeria failed to progress from the group stage and Japan was knocked out by the USA in the quarter-finals, Spain and Brazil are the last two standing from their group, poised for a showdown that promises intense competition.
Brazil, determined to get revenge, will be seeking redemption after their 2-0 defeat to the World Cup-winning Spanish team just six days ago. The stakes are high, and the tension is palpable as both teams strive for a spot in the final.
The semi-final will take place at the iconic Orange Vélodrome in Marseille, adding an extra layer of excitement to this crucial encounter. Fans are eagerly anticipating a display of skill, strategy, and determination from both sides.
When the sides clashed on match day three, it was Mariona Caldentey and Alexia Putellas who gave Spain the advantage and secured their third win out of three.
The game was full of drama, as Brazil saw themselves go down to ten players before the break following the sending off of national team legend Marta for a high-boot challenge on Olga Carmona.
The foul and subsequent red card meant that Marta was handed a two-match suspension, and despite appeals, this will remain in place for tonight’s game.
Marta announced prior to the Olympics that this would be her last tournament before retirement, so this decision confirms her final game for the Brazil national team will either be in the gold or bronze medal match.
Montse Tomé’s Spanish side undoubtedly have the psychological edge heading into tonight’s match.
Their win over Brazil in the group stages places them as favourites, and their form has been nothing short of exceptional throughout the tournament. Themselves and the USA are the only two teams left unbeaten.
With so much at stake, tonight’s match promises to be a thrilling encounter, filled with passion and high-level football. Both teams have everything to play for, and the world will be watching as Spain and Brazil battle for a coveted spot in the Olympic final.
