Zambia’s beloved Copper Queens are set to begin their 2024 Olympic tournament tomorrow, with an exciting fixture against the formidable USA on the horizon.
As anticipation builds, Beyond The 90 takes a closer look at their chances in Paris this summer.
Bruce Mwape’s side faces a challenging task in Group B, contending with women’s football giants such as the USA, Australia, and Germany. Despite this formidable opposition, the Copper Queens should not be underestimated.
With emerging stars like Barbara Banda leading their ranks, the Copper Queens promise to be an unfamiliar and unpredictable foe this summer.
Back-to-back Olympic qualification
In recent years, Zambia has solidified its place on the women’s football map. Not only did they qualify for their first Women’s World Cup in 2023, but they have also secured back-to-back Olympic Games appearances.
Their first Olympic appearance, however, was not the dream debut they had hoped for, as they suffered a 10-3 defeat at the hands of reigning champions, the Netherlands.
Despite this setback, they showcased their resilience and attacking prowess in a thrilling 4-4 draw against China before narrowly losing 1-0 to Brazil and being eliminated from the competition.
At that time, only three players from their 18-woman squad played outside of Zambia, presenting an unfamiliar challenge to the teams in their group. Despite the odds, the Copper Queens made a lasting impression on the international stage.
One standout performer was young striker Barbara Banda, who spectacularly announced herself by scoring two hat tricks in three matches. Her remarkable performance marked her as a player to watch on the world stage.
Players to watch
Banda is once again undoubtedly the star to watch in this tournament.
Since joining Orlando Pride in the NWSL in March, she has already made her mark, emerging as a joint top goal scorer.
Her agility, speed, and keen eye for goal make her a constant threat to any defence. Banda’s leadership and determination on the field inspire her teammates and provide the Copper Queens with a competitive edge.
Another key player is Racheal Kundananji, whose versatility and skill will be crucial for Zambia’s aspirations.
Her ability to control the game’s tempo and link up play, along with her impressive shooting skills, will be vital in breaking down strong opposition.
While the Copper Queens face a daunting task in their group, their journey is a testament to the rapid growth of women’s football in Zambia.
With each tournament, they gain invaluable experience and exposure, propelling them to new heights. As the Copper Queens prepare to take on the world, they carry with them the hopes and dreams of a nation.
Zambia will kick off their tournament against Emma Hayes’ USA on Thursday 25 July before taking on Australia and Germany on 28 and 31 July respectively.
Throughout the tournament, we will be providing daily coverage with match reports and features for each team. You can also watch all the Olympic action on BBC in the UK or Discovery+.
