League champions Chelsea have announced that superstar striker Sam Kerr has extended her contract with the Blues until 2026.
After joining the league giants in 2019, the Australia captain has made 128 appearances, scoring 99 goals and winning 11 trophies. Her accolades include five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Community Shield.
Unfortunately, in January, her season was tragically cut short when she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during warm weather training in Morocco, which also ruled her out of the Olympics this year.
Kerr is Australia’s all-time leading goal scorer and was the all-time leading goal scorer in the NWSL, netting 77 goals for the Chicago Red Stars. Even after her departure in 2019, she remains second, with Lynn Williams at the top with 79 goals.
Kerr made her first appearance for Chelsea against Reading in January 2020, creating two assists in the game.
In the 2023/24 season, Kerr was the runner-up for the Women’s Ballon d’Or, having finished third in the previous two years. In January 2024, she was announced as one of the Women’s XI for the EA Sports FC Team of the Year.
She also made her presence felt in the Women’s Champions League this season with five goals in four games. Her absence was sorely felt in Chelsea’s Champions League match against Barcelona, and many believe the outcome might have been different if she had not torn her ACL in January.
Her contract extension means she will stay at the club for at least another two years, as she now embarks on the next era of her journey under new manager Sonia Bompastor.
