Super-sub, Zaiga Làcìte’s late strike secured Peterborough United’s final point of the season this Sunday against Leafield Athletic, who managed to avoid relegation in a draw.
Grace Godwin opened the scoring early on for ninth place team, Leafield Athletic, just five minutes in.
The goal came from a deflection off of Neive Corry, who had just cleared away another shot coming from inside the box, leaving the ball to drop for Godwin to strike.
While Leafield were the first to find the back of the net, Peterborough were proving a huge threat, with shots on goal from Evie Driscoll-King, Poppie Brown and Renai Bennett in the first half.
Despite this, it remained 0-1 at half time, with the Posh hoping to claw their way back into the game in front of the 255 fans in attendance.
At half time, Sam Winch made two changes to his side, taking off Bennett and Katie Middleton for Megan Lawlor and Keir Perkins respectively.
In the 60th minute, the Posh had their final substitution with Zaiga Làcìte coming on for Brown.
Perkins made a run down the right-side of the pitch, sending the ball into the box for Làcìte to find an equaliser in the 73rd minute, volleying the ball past Leafield captain, Colette Bell.
Peterborough were on the attack in the second half but Leafield, so close to relegation, didn’t let up under pressure and although there were a few close calls from both sides, the match ended 1-1.
This left the Posh Women finishing third in Women’s National League Division One Midlands and Leafield a secure two points ahead of tenth place Notts County.
