There are only six WSL Matches left of 2023/24 season and this afternoon marks the highly anticipated derby day. The Etihad Stadium will host a match between Manchester City and Manchester United,  scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm (GMT).

Each match from here on out until the end of the season will be crucial for Gareth Taylor’s team.

With Manchester City tied on points with league leaders Chelsea, but only goal difference separating them, they hold a strong position in the standings.

Meanwhile, Manchester United currently sit fourth in the table, but a victory at the Etihad Stadium would greatly improve their chances of qualifying for European competitions.

City has come out victorious in both of their matches against United this season, triumphing over their rivals in both the league and the League Cup.

In the most recent match, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp’s goals led City to a 2-1 win in the Continental Cup, guaranteeing their spot in the next round of the tournament.

In November 2023, the WSL game took place at Old Trafford. City put on an impressive performance, coming back from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory and hand Marc Skinner’s team their first loss at the stadium.

In the previous season’s match, over forty-thousand fans filled the Manchester City Club stadium as they watched a game that ended in a 1-1 tie.

Laura Coombs scored with a header to even out Leah Galton’s earlier goal and today, all signs are indicating for another exciting showdown.

Mary Earps is determined to prevent City – who have scored a whopping 42 goals this season – from scoring any more against her.

The Lionesses’ keeper has consistently shown her prowess on the grandest stages and is determined to disrupt the Citizens’ quest for the title.

Marc Skinner, believes that while she possesses impressive skills and strength on the field, it is her composure under pressure that sets her apart as one of the best in the game.

Standings in the table

Liverpool is currently hot on Manchester United heels this season, with only goal difference separating the two.

It’s crucial for United to secure a win in the upcoming derby if they want to stay in the running for a spot in next year’s Champions League, and dropping points could also result in Liverpool overtaking them in the standings.

Marc Skinner’s team would need an exceptional performance to defeat City at their home ground, the Etihad.

The women’s team of Man City is known for their dominant ball possession, similar to the men’s team and to secure a win in the derby, Manchester United must play with determination and a strong presence.

Man City, who have an impressive 10-game unbeaten streak in the WSL, are determined to claim their first WSL title since 2016 and will be cautious not to drop points anywhere which could open the door for defending champions Chelsea.

Considering their current form, a victory for Manchester United in the derby would certainly come as a shock.
